Abstract

The mass revolution of 1857-58 has a prominent place in the events taking place at the international level against imperialism. Although Karl Marx has a prominent place in the early historiography done on this rebellion along with English historians, and intellectuals, there was also a huge difference in their approach. While Marx described this rebellion as a people's war fought for liberation against imperialist exploitation, imperialist writers described it as motivated by personal interests and personal reasons. On the other hand, the British government was holding a particular class responsible for this rebellion, which also needed to be answered. The manner in which the revolt was portrayed by official and non-official English administrators and scholars and historians naturally caused outrage among educated Indians, and some of them were motivated to uncover its true cause and nature.
